The Newfoundland (Newfie) is built for strength and activity, with an oily, water repelling coat and webbed feet. The Newfoundland is at home on land or in water and is a devoted companion, with natural life-saving instincts from water. It is adaptable to his surroundings and the amount of exercise taken, but ideally it does need a lot of exercise. Needs plenty of good food as a youngster to build up his strength, and as an adult his needs are comparable to other big breeds. The dense coat is double, flat, of coarse texture and has an oily water resistant nature. When brushed wrong way it falls back into place naturally. The forelegs are well feathered. This lovely coat does need regular grooming, and demands extra attention when moulting. It is a member of the Working group. |
